Manor Estate Farm- our story

Hi I’m Ami Downs. I’m 21 years old from Doncaster, South Yorkshire. I have also loved animals. From a very young age when someone would ask me my dream job I would say to have a farm. When I was at school I did my work experience at RSPCA and fell in love with rescue.

We actually never meant for Manor Estate Farm to be what it is today and kind of started by surprise. When I was 11 years old i rescued my first pony. He was a white Shetland pony called Wellington. Wellington had be badly abused by his previous owner. He had been hit in his eye and it was badly infected. We made sure Wellington saw a vet straightaway. He said more than likely Wellington would loose the eye. By some miracle the operation went better than expected and not only did Wellington keep his eye but he also kept his sight!

After Wellington I decided we needed to get him a companion. So if we went to the animal sales, ideally I was looking for another Shetland pony. As the end of the day came around and we still hadn’t found anything, on our way out we passed Dez the Donkey who was tied up and left at the gate. I couldn’t leave him! So we brought Dez home and the rest is history! Four years later Welly and Dez really are the best of friends.

After having the boys of livery yards for years we decided to look for a plot of land near our house. We then found a small plot (we are only one acre) and we moved and set up our Facebook page which was just supposed to be a blog about the boys.

After my previous work at RSPCA and my contacts there we was then passed on goats, then sheep. Then a pig from Doncaster council and we just kept growing. Manor Estate Farm is the best thing that ever happened to me. Its so rewarding when I look back on the amount of animals we have rescued.
